I have struggled with this challenge too.

I have experienced the Roller Coaster of achieving English learning goals, as you do.

I initially ponder the pivotal question: “Why am I doing this?”

This self-reflective phase forms the bedrock of my journey, clarifying my motivations and aspirations for mastering a new language.

As I ascend, doubts may emerge, but with perseverance, I begin to discern signs of progress.

However, amidst the twists and turns of learning, moments of confusion inevitably surface.

I grapple with challenges, feeling overwhelmed and frustrated at times.

Yet, as I navigate through these obstacles, I come to acknowledge how far I’ve come, drawing strength from my journey’s milestones.

Finally, at the peak of the linguistic roller coaster, I exhale a sigh of relief, uttering, “Oh, I am glad I did it,” as I revel in the satisfaction of my linguistic achievement.

As we all go through our doubts and fears I found ways to make my English learning goals easy to reach and to achieve them faster.

You often lack clarity and specificity in your goals, struggle with motivation and planning, and may lack accountability. Seeking guidance or mentorship to address these specific issues could prove highly beneficial.

31-45 points (Moderate Score): Scores falling within this range indicate room for improvement in your goal-setting proficiency. You may possess some clarity in your goals but struggle with specificity, motivation, or consistent planning. You could benefit from resources designed to refine your goal-setting approach, providing structure and guidance to enhance your existing skills and address weaknesses.

46-60 points (Good Score): A score within this range signals a solid foundation in goal setting. You typically have clear, specific goals, are motivated to pursue them, and can formulate actionable plans. While you demonstrate proficiency, there’s still potential for improvement. You may focus on refining your goal-setting process rather than starting from scratch.

61-75 points (High Score): If you achieve scores in this range, you exhibit advanced skills in goal setting. You demonstrate clarity and specificity in your goals, maintain consistent motivation, devise effective plans, and reflect on your progress. While already proficient, you can further fine-tune your skills, maintain consistency, and capitalize on your strengths to achieve even greater success in your goal-setting endeavors.

Implement SMART Goals Approach

Implementing the SMART goals approach is crucial for achieving success in your endeavors and reaching your English learning goals.

This method offers a structured framework that ensures your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

By adhering to these criteria, you gain clarity on what you aim to achieve, establish tangible metrics to gauge progress, and set realistic expectations.

Moreover, SMART goals compel you to align your aspirations with your abilities and resources, fostering a sense of purpose and direction.

The time-bound aspect instills a sense of urgency, motivating you to take consistent action towards your goals.

The SMART goals approach empowers you to effectively plan, execute, and achieve your objectives, driving you closer to your desired outcomes with greater efficiency and success.

Put an action plan in place 

Planning is crucial for reaching your English learning goals.

Even seemingly simple goals require careful planning to increase your chances of success.

One effective tip for personal development is breaking your goals into smaller steps.

When you break down big goals into smaller tasks, it becomes easier to accomplish them.

This approach makes tackling larger, long-term goals feel more manageable.

Set 3 Levels of Goals

  1. Base: The least you would accept
  2. Happy:  You will be happy when you reach your goal
    For example: I have learned 20 words this week
  3. Over the moon: You will be joyful when you reach your goal
    For example: I have learned 30 words this week

I would suggest trying goal-setting apps. They have different futures and options to help you organize your objectives and track your progress.

I will mention some for your convenience if you haven’t come across them yet.

One of them is Todoist. Todoist is a versatile task management app that allows you to create to-do lists, set deadlines, and prioritize tasks.

It’s ideal for breaking down your goals into actionable steps and staying organized with various projects and deadlines.

I think the most popular is Trello. It uses boards, lists, and cards to help you visually organize your goals and tasks.

You can create boards for different projects, set deadlines, assign tasks to team members (if applicable), and track your progress as you move cards from one list to another.

Also, you can try Coach.me which offers goal tracking, habit tracking, and coaching services to help you achieve your goals.

You can set goals, track your progress, receive reminders and encouragement, and even hire a personal coach for additional support and accountability.

Goal Setting Journals

Goal-setting journals are other tools for organizing your goals, tracking progress, and staying motivated.

Like other tools, they offer different features and formats, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs and preferences.

Whether you prefer a structured approach with daily prompts or a more flexible format for setting and tracking your goals, there’s a journal out there to help you stay organized and motivated on your journey to success.

I’ve compiled a list of options in case you want to try this one.

The Five Minute Journal

This journal focuses on gratitude, productivity, and positivity.

It prompts you to write down three things you’re grateful for each day, three things that would make the day great, and daily affirmations.

It also has space for reflecting on your accomplishments and what could have made the day even better.

The Self Journal

The Self Journal is designed to help you achieve your goals in 13 weeks.

It includes sections for setting long-term and short-term goals, creating action plans, tracking progress, and reflecting on your daily habits.

It also encourages you to prioritize tasks and schedule your day for maximum productivity.

Goal Setting Templates

Goal-setting templates provide a structured framework for defining your goals, breaking them down into actionable steps, and tracking your progress.

If you want to implement the SMART Goals approach I recommend trying the SMART Goals Template.

As we mentioned above SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

This template prompts you to define each aspect of your goal, such as what you want to achieve, how you will measure success, and when you plan to accomplish it.

It helps ensure your goals are clear, realistic, and achievable within a specific timeframe.

GROW Model Template is not very popular but some of my students use it. Give it a try to check if it will work for you.

 The GROW model (Goal, Reality, Options, Wrap-up) is a coaching framework for setting and achieving goals.

This template guides you through each stage of the process, from clarifying your goal and assessing your current reality to exploring options and creating an action plan.

It encourages self-reflection and problem-solving to overcome obstacles and achieve success.

I discovered the SWOT Analysis Template in my Small Business Entrepreneurship class, primarily presented as a business-related tool.

However, I realized its versatility as a valuable instrument for achieving various goals, regardless of their nature or context, including English learning goals.

How it works?

SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) helps you assess your internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats related to your goal. This template prompts you to identify factors that support or hinder your goal achievement and develop strategies to capitalize on strengths, address weaknesses, seize opportunities, and mitigate threats.

Action Plan Template: An action plan breaks down your goal into specific tasks, assigns responsibilities, and sets deadlines for completion.

This template helps you prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and monitor progress toward your goal.

It includes sections for listing action steps, setting deadlines, identifying resources needed, and tracking progress.
