In my previous article “How to Learn English Step by Step the Right Way,” I discussed the importance of determining why you are learning English and why this is crucial.

I emphasized the importance of starting your learning journey on the right foot from the beginning. The first step is to figure out your “why”.

Strategy # 1    Determine your “Why”

My philosophy is: It’s not about where you’re going; it’s about why.

Why Matters More Than the Where?

When learning English, many people focus solely on where they are going, but understanding why is equally important.

Let’s explore this concept further.

Learning a new language can be challenging, especially in English.

Often, learners get caught up in the destination, such as mastering grammar rules or memorizing vocabulary.

While these are essential aspects, it’s equally crucial to understand the reasons behind them.

Think of it this way: Imagine you’re planning a trip to a new city.

Knowing where you want to go is essential, but understanding why you want to visit those places adds depth to your experience.

Similarly, in language learning, knowing where you want to reach, like fluency or proficiency, is essential.

However, understanding why you want to achieve those goals can provide motivation and direction.

So, why are you learning English?

Are you aiming for better job opportunities, planning to travel to English-speaking countries, or simply eager to connect with people from different cultures?

Understanding your motivations can keep you focused and driven during your studies.

Furthermore, knowing the ‘why’ behind your learning can help you tailor your study methods to suit your goals and preferences.

For example, if your goal is to travel, you might focus on learning practical phrases and vocabulary related to travel and tourism.

On the other hand, if you’re learning English for academic purposes, you might prioritize reading and writing skills.

🔔EXPERT’S ADVICE:  While it’s essential to have a destination in mind when learning English, understanding why you’re on this journey is equally crucial. So, take some time to reflect on your motivations, and let them guide you as you go.

Strategy # 2   Be Consistent Through “Language Learning Game”

This game is different from the games you play on your computer and quizzes.

We’ll talk about those games later.

Now, let me share my unique strategy, proven to work—a behavior-changing game that I used to overcome procrastination and build consistency.

Yes, I admit it.

Consistency is my first name, and Procrastination is my middle name. 🙂

When I started learning English, staying consistent with my studies was a real challenge.

Learning vocabulary, writing new words, and practicing felt like climbing a mountain every day.

I’d wake up dreading the thought of studying, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work ahead of me.

It was a constant struggle—I didn’t enjoy the process, and I lacked any clear strategy to make it more manageable.

When I reflected on why I wasn’t finding fun in my learning journey, it felt like throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping it would stick.

I realized I needed to think outside the box to unlock more enjoyment.

Let’s play a game called “The Learning Game”.

Studying used to feel like a chore to me, but I knew if I made it fun, I’d be easier and more likely to do it.

One day, the idea struck me: what if I turned learning into a daily game?

The thought gave me chills—it was the first time I felt genuinely excited about studying.

So, I decided to make learning English my game.

Here’s how it worked: I committed to studying for half an hour every day, and if I kept it up for five days straight, I’d reward myself with dinner at my favorite restaurant on Saturday night.

I couldn’t wait for my prize, especially since I didn’t have much extra money for dining out.

Throughout the week, I’d think about what I’d order and anticipate the delicious meal.

This excitement made studying in the mornings a breeze. Knowing that I was one step closer to my reward motivated me to start each day with enthusiasm.

By the end of the week, I enjoyed a fantastic dinner, savoring every bite.

Encouraged by my success, I decided to level up the game.

I added another half-hour study session in the evenings, making it twice a day.

Surprisingly, it was still fun and not overwhelming.

As I continued to reward myself for consistent effort, learning became an integral part of my routine.

To keep things interesting, I started experimenting with different learning methods, like immersion techniques in the kitchen or creating flashcards.

Each week, I challenged myself to try new strategies, making learning feel like a natural part of my life.

Now, “The Learning Game” strategy is second nature to me.

It is my happy place.

Whether it’s recording videos or practicing my presentations in front of a mirror, I find joy in the process.

If you struggle with consistency in language learning, I highly recommend giving this game a try.

It’s a game-changer that can turn studying into something you look forward to every day.

Strategy # 3 Shift Your Mindset: From Luck to Goal-Grabber Mentality

You might be surprised to hear this, but I’m not too fond of the idea of luck.

Yes, I said it!

Do you ever get tired of hearing about luck as much as I do?

But hey, let me explain it.

So, why do I have such a strong dislike for the word luck?

Well, let me tell you a little story.

Back in college, when I was taking English classes, I had a classmate who had a habit of remarking, “Oh, they’re so lucky. They learn English so quickly,” whenever she encountered someone proficient in the language.

However, the reality is quite different. It’s not just luck that leads to fluency in English.

Many factors contribute to language proficiency, including dedication, consistent practice, and effective learning strategies.

While some people may appear to excel effortlessly, their success is often the result of hard work and perseverance rather than mere luck.

I’ve also had conversations with people about my success in writing. I wanted to inspire them to pursue their dreams too!

But instead, some would just say, “You got lucky.”

But let me tell you, success in writing has nothing to do with luck.

Successful writers:

  • Follow their passion
  • Write everyday
  • Show grit and determination
  • And never give up, no matter what

A lot of people give up right before they’re about to succeed. And let me tell you, that’s not luck!

But let’s face it, becoming fluent in a year is not the norm for most people.

Even if someone does achieve fluency in such a short time, they still need to put in the effort to maintain and further develop their language skills.

So, how can you increase your chances of “getting lucky” in fluent English?

  • Create and follow a Roadmap: Action plan, Daily learning routine
  • Add a brick to the “learning wall” every single day. Practice everyday
  • Grind (work hard) to achieve your goal

That’s the real secret to getting lucky. And trust me, when you do it this way, you’ll feel like the luckiest person in the world! 🙂
