Reward Your Progress: Stay Inspired Learning a New Language
As language enthusiasts, we all know that achieving fluency is a long-term game. Like any journey, it’s filled with highs and lows, and it can be difficult to stay inspired learning a new language.
While the ultimate goal of fluency might feel far away, celebrating your progress along the way is essential.
This approach boosts your motivation and makes the process more enjoyable and sustainable.
And since it’s Christmas time—the season of giving—what better time to reward yourself for all the effort you’ve put into learning a language?
After all, you deserve a little celebration for your achievements, big or small.
The Power of Celebrating Small Wins
Small wins are the building blocks of big accomplishments and help to stay inspired learning a new language.
Whether mastering a tricky grammar rule, memorizing a list of new vocabulary words, or completing your first conversation in a new language, these moments of progress deserve recognition.
Celebrating them keeps you motivated and reminds you that your hard work pays off.
Research shows that positive reinforcement boosts productivity and helps form long-lasting habits.
What is positive reinforcement?
Oh no, Magdalena—I can almost hear you saying, “Not theory again! It’s Christmas time; leave us alone and let us celebrate!”
I get it, I really do.
I’m not here to be overly serious during the festive season, but I promise to be quick!
Let’s take just a moment to explore why small celebrations and rewards can be so impactful in your learning —and why I’m such a huge fan of them.
Stick with me for just a little longer—I promise it’s worth it!
Positive reinforcement means encouraging good behavior or habits by rewarding them.
For example, if you learn a new set of vocabulary words and treat yourself to your favorite snack afterward, you’re using positive reinforcement.
Science backs this up!
Psychologist B.F. Skinner showed in his research that behaviors followed by positive rewards are more likely to be repeated.
Your brain releases dopamine, a “feel-good” chemical, when you're rewarded, making you feel happy and motivated to keep going.
So, rewarding small achievements, like completing a language lesson, builds good habits and keeps you inspired!
By rewarding yourself for small achievements, you’re essentially telling your brain, “This is worth it!”
As promised, I'll keep it short! If you're curious to learn more about B.F. Skinner and his fascinating work on positive reinforcement, check out here.
My Journey of Rewarding Small Wins
When I first started learning English, I often felt overwhelmed.
The grammar rules, idioms, and tricky pronunciation made progress seem slow.
But I discovered that rewarding myself for small achievements made all the difference.
For example, after I finished a challenging language exercise, I’d treat myself to a hot chocolate or watch an episode of my favorite English TV series.
When I successfully memorized 20 new vocabulary words, I’d buy myself a small gift, like a notebook for journaling in English.
One year, during the Christmas season, I set a goal to write a letter to a friend entirely in English.
It was a big challenge, but when I finally mailed that letter, I rewarded myself with a festive treat—a cozy sweater I’d been eyeing for weeks.
It was a well-earned gift and a symbol of my progress and it helped me stay inspired learning a new language.
Why Rewards Work
Rewards act as a form of positive feedback.
They remind you that every step forward is significant and worth celebrating.
