Create an Effective Actionable Plan

What is an actionable learning plan?

A learning action plan serves as a structured framework of measurable goals and objectives designed to guide you toward success.

Essentially, it comprises a list of specific steps or tasks essential for achieving your learning objectives.

Why should you work on a learning action plan?

Developing an action plan is instrumental in establishing both long-term and short-term goals, allowing you to maintain focus on your studies.

Providing clear direction and a step-by-step roadmap for what needs to be accomplished and when a learning plan offers several advantages:

  1. Plan and monitor your studying progress towards your goal.
  2. Enhance concentration, organize tasks efficiently, and optimize productivity.
  3. Anticipate and prepare for potential obstacles.
  4. Prioritize tasks and activities effectively.

As a visual representation where goals are documented, a well-structured plan fosters commitment and increases motivation, serving as a constant reminder of your objectives.

How can you develop an effective actionable plan?

TIP# 1: Define Your Goals

In the initial phase, it’s crucial to define your goals.

Are you studying English studies with the aim of:

  1. Advancing your career goals?
  2. Residing in an English-speaking country?
  3. Exploring international travel opportunities?
  4. Pursuing education or employment abroad?
  5. Enhancing proficiency in Internet and social media usage?

Discovering the motivation to learn English should prove to be a straightforward endeavor.

Setting clear goals is the key to your success. Trust me.

Your goals should be unique to you!

That brings us to the next point – tailor your goals to your own needs and dreams.

If you’re learning English for work, your goals might be different from someone learning for travel adventures.

It’s all about making your English learning journey personal and meaningful to you.

So, take a moment to think about what you want to accomplish.

TIP # 2: Establish Goals and Outline the Actionable Steps

English Self-Study Guide – Topic: How to create a learning action plan

Once you have defined your overarching long-term goal, proceed to set your smaller milestones and delineate the steps necessary to reach them.

Get SMART!

Initiate the process by framing your goal using the SMART criteria.

SMART goal-setting is a method designed to guide the goal-setting process.

What distinguishes this technique is its specific criteria, enabling you to measure progress and gauge goal attainment effectively.

Moreover, SMART goal-setting imparts a structured and manageable framework to your objectives.

Introduced by George T. Doran, the Director of Corporate Planning for a Washington Power Water Company, in the November 1981 issue of Management Review, SMART goals have since gained widespread recognition and adoption.

Doran’s paper, “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management’s goals and objectives,” outlined the key principles of SMART goals, proving its efficacy across diverse industries and organizations.

What do SMART goals entail in the realm of English learning?

The SMART English self-study action plan integrates the five characteristics of a goal, as discussed earlier.

Let’s explore the five steps crucial for achieving your learning goals efficiently and with reduced stress.

At the heart of a solid goal lies logical reasoning.

SMART represents goals that are:

Specific – Answer the who, what, where, when, which, and why to clearly define your learning objectives.

The more precise and transparent your response, the easier it becomes to devise a practical action plan and assess results.

Take ownership of the process by expressing “I will” when setting goals, reinforcing to yourself that you can and will succeed.

Example: Today is Saturday, and I have a grammar and vocabulary test on Thursday. My goal is to study diligently to pass the test and earn an A grade. To make this goal specific, break down “studying hard for tests” into specific tasks, such as understanding when to use the Past Perfect tense and learning words from the Vocabulary list.

Measurable – Monitor your progress by establishing goals that are specific and measurable.

When a goal is both specific and measurable, the likelihood of achievement increases.

Utilize smaller mini-goals to gauge progress, choosing either time-based targets (study for 15 minutes a day) or results-based targets (learn 15 words a day), depending on what suits you best.

Example: Applying this concept to our previous example, measurable goals could include learning 20 new words from the Vocabulary list and understanding when to use the Past Perfect tense, quantified by specific tasks like learning the three most common uses of the Past Perfect tense.

Tracking milestones is always thrilling.

Achieving a goal is a significant accomplishment and a perfect reason to celebrate and reward yourself for each success along the journey.

Achievable/Attainable – Plan Your Steps

When planning your steps, make sure they are achievable.

Avoid setting overly difficult learning goals like “Get through an entire textbook this week” or “Learn 200 new words a day.”

Such goals can lead to disappointment and loss of interest. Instead, set reasonable and realistic goals that will boost your motivation.

For example, aim to learn 5 new words a day and understand one grammar point a day for an upcoming test.

Also, consider meeting with an English tutor to focus on your weak spots.

Realistic – Willing and Able to Work Toward the Goal

Set goals that are relevant to your life, considering your lifestyle and everyday responsibilities.

Recall past experiences to determine what’s achievable.

For instance, if you successfully learned 30 words in three days for a previous test, it’s realistic to expect a similar success this time.

Setting realistic goals ensures they are attainable, like learning 30 words on the vocabulary list and the three most common uses of the Past Perfect tense in three days.

Timely – Fix Your Goal to a Specific Date

The final element of SMART goals is making them timely.

This involves giving yourself time and setting a deadline for achieving your goal.

Set a realistic time limit and prioritize your time for specific activities over others.

Challenge yourself but be persistent, and remember to enjoy the process.

For example, plan to prepare for an English test in three days, study for one hour each on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, or dedicate an extra hour on Wednesday.

Remember, the golden rule is to enjoy and have fun throughout your learning journey.

These SMART goal elements will be crucial in creating your learning action plan.

The basics of Second-language acquisition (SLA) suggest three main elements: comprehensible input, comprehensible output, and feedback.

These elements are fundamental to language practice, and an effective study plan will incorporate all three.

Balance is key, involving listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Avoid focusing exclusively on one activity and strive for a well-rounded approach.

With these concepts in mind, start creating your learning plan, listing tasks, due dates, and outcomes to achieve your clear learning goals.

TIP# 3: Divide the Significant Tasks into Manageable Projects

My typical planning horizon extends to one year, encompassing three or four primary goals to guide my English studies throughout the year.

This forms the vision map for my learning journey.

Once I establish these overarching goals, I further break them into smaller, more manageable projects.

This not only makes execution easier but also enhances overall manageability.

Drawing from personal experience, I understand the potential for feeling overwhelmed by substantial projects, which often leads to procrastination.

To counteract this, I recommend jotting down monthly goals and, at the beginning of each month, strategically planning each week within that timeframe.

For example:

My primary goal for this year is to elevate my proficiency from Beginner to Intermediate. While the goal is clear, breaking it down into actionable steps is key.

  • I will learn 2000 new words.
  • I will grasp 20 new grammar points.
  • I will engage in 5 hours of speaking practice every week.

Now, plan every week:

  • I will learn 30 words.
  • I will understand 3 new grammar points.
  • I will dedicate 1 hour each day to speaking practice, with weekend sessions for vocabulary and grammar recap.
  • I will schedule a tutoring session every Wednesday.

Finally, break it down into daily activities:

  • I will review 10 words every evening before bedtime.
  • I will revisit grammar exercises during my morning coffee.
  • I will go through flashcards while commuting.

This approach ensures a systematic breakdown of goals, making them more achievable and minimizing the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed.

Revise your list by organizing tasks based on their priority. Evaluate each item according to its importance and designate each task to a specific category.

You may opt for:

a (1), (2), (3) system

or

an A, B, C system

TIP# 5: Identify the Required Resources

Ensure you have all the essential resources necessary for your studies. If any are unavailable, create a plan to obtain them. If purchasing textbooks is costly, explore library options. You can also create do-it-yourself flashcards, posters, and learning boards. Ensure you have enough materials to practice the Four Skills – reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

For example:

  • Reading materials: books, websites, blogs, comics, apps
  • Writing materials: vocabulary and grammar exercise books, start a blog or contribute as a guest to blogs in your interest, social media
  • Speaking materials: listen to English songs, learn the lyrics, and sing along. Read out loud your reads.

TIP# 6: Visualize Your Action Learning Plan

Create posters and pin them on your desk, doors, and the fridge (or on the wall next to your oven for pinning DIY flashcards).

Use moments like cooking to review vocabulary or grammar.

TIP #7: Monitor and Evaluate

Monitor and evaluate your learning plan progress daily. Track each step, noting what worked and what didn’t.

End each day by asking:

  • Was each step implemented correctly?
  • Were they implemented on time?
  • Was the expected outcome achieved?

Evaluate the learning results:

  • Have you reached the desired English level?
  • Have you progressed in your study?
  • Have you regressed in your English learning?
  • Have you remained at the same English level?

Reward yourself for completing tasks on schedule and make adjustments as needed.

Reflect on what hindered goal achievement, identify obstacles or distractions, and address them.

Identify time wasters and take steps to manage your time more effectively.

Studying independently doesn’t mean being alone; seek help from teachers, and classmates, or find a mentor/tutor.

Rely on your support system—family, friends, and the community—to overcome obstacles and struggles.

Don’t regret failures; learn from mistakes as they’re part of the learning process.

When communicating in English, don’t dwell on potential mistakes; relaxation and consistent practice are crucial.

Overcoming fears and seeing desired results come with continual practice.

As you progress, your language learning goals may change.

Be flexible, adjust goals accordingly, and embrace new interests in the language that may emerge unexpectedly.

For example, if your initial goal was learning basic phrases for travel but you discover a passion for literature, adjust your goals to include literary comprehension.

  2. Employ the S.M.A.R.T approach in crafting your plan to facilitate progress tracking.
  3. Cultivate a well-rounded study plan by incorporating a mix of activities that focus on both spoken and written English. Ensure that all three key principles—input, output, and feedback—are included.
  4. Regularly update and complete the action plan daily.

Many learners avoid practicing English due to fear of errors, but pushing your output to grow is essential for positive language development. Neglecting this aspect can adversely affect two out of the three key principles of language learning.

  7. Celebrate every goal achieved and each success along the way. Establish a habit of rewarding yourself with a small gift, such as a cup of coffee or something pleasant, when tasks, especially important ones, are completed as planned.
  8. Seek help or advice without hesitation when needed. Lean on your support system, including family and friends, and don’t wait until you feel overwhelmed or frustrated.
  9. Understand that the plan serves as a guide to aid your studies and simplify your life. You have the flexibility to make changes at any time. If you find yourself overwhelmed daily, revisit and readjust your weekly, monthly, and overarching goals or reconsider the time frame.
